Red Sonja movie on hold after more sex-assault allegations against director Bryan Singer

Bryan Singer’s Red Sonja may never see the light of day after all.

The comic book movie, led by a sword-wielding heroine, “is not on the slate at the moment and is not for sale at the EFM in Berlin,” a spokesperson for Millennium Films told Hollywood website Deadline Monday.

That’s a sharp departure for studio chairman Avi Lerner, who defended Singer less than two weeks ago after four more men accused the director of sexual abuse, including several while they were minors.

“The over $ 800 million Bohemian Rhapsody has grossed, making it the highest grossing drama in film history, is testament to his remarkable vision and acumen,” Lerner said at the time. “I know the difference between agenda driven fake news and reality, and I am very comfortable with this decision. In America people are innocent until proven otherwise.”

Lerner later apologized and said his remarks “came out wrong,” but then backed Singer again over the weekend during an interview with Israeli media, insisting that he had more congratulatory feedback than complaints.

“The complaints I receive ask why I don’t fire him, and the answer is simple: Bryan hasn’t been found guilty of anything in court,” he told Ynetnews. We take these accusations in all seriousness and we looked into them, but at the moment, from what we gather, they are completely baseless.”

It’s unclear why exactly Millennium Films decided to bench the project now, and a spokesperson did not return a request for comment.

Late last month, Singer, who has previously been sued for raping a 17-year-old man and accused of several other instances of sexual misconduct, faced new allegations of abused in an explosive Atlantic article.

Among the accusers was Victor Valdovinos, who claimed Singer molested him when he was 13 years old and an extra on the 1998 film Apt Pupil. Two other unidentified men claimed they had sex with Singer when one was 15 and one was 17, while another claimed he and Singer had oral sex when he was 17 or 18.

“He would stick his hands down your pants without your consent,” the man, referred to as Ben, told The Atlantic. “He was predatory in that he would ply people with alcohol and drugs and then have sex with them.”

Singer brushed off the allegations and called it a “homophobic smear piece.”

In light of the new allegations, Singer’s BAFTA nomination for Bohemian Rhapsody was suspended “until the outcome of the allegations has been resolved.”

Singer, who was fired from the Queen biopic after disappearing from set, has not been at any of the awards shows yet this year, where the movie has done well so far.
