Now Frederik Andersen out with the flu

Look up. Is there a little black cloud hovering over Frederik Andersen?

On the cusp of returning to action having battled through a sore groin, it was announced Saturday the Maple Leafs No. 1 goalie is now out with the flu.

Andersen did not practise on Saturday, meaning Michael Hutchinson will start his fifth game in a row with the Boston Bruins in town.

“Freddie is sick. He’s got the flu,” said Babcock. “Throwing up yesterday. I don’t know when he’s going (to play).”

Meanwhile Garret Sparks – out with a concussion — worked out Saturday for the first time against shooters.

“That’s a step,” Babcock said of Sparks’ progress.

Kasimir Kaskisuo was recalled again to back up Hutchinson.

With Andersen out, the Leafs have gone 4-3-0. Sparks was 2-1-0 with a 3.35 goals-against average and .885 save percentage. Hutchinson was 2-2-0, 2.53, .919.

“He’s been good for us, he’s made some key saves,” Auston Matthews said of Hutchinson. “In the couple of games we lost, it’s been more on us than it has on him, defensively we made mistakes. We hung him out to dry in that Nashville game.”
