Dem Rep. Speier: DNC Lawsuit 'Ill-Conceived'

Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier of California called the Democratic National Committee’s lawsuit over the 2016 presidential election “ill-conceived” and said she was more interested in “getting to the truth,” TheWashington Free Beaconreported Friday.

“I’m not interested in a political tit for tat. I’m interested in getting to the truth and if there’s criminal conduct that’s been engaged in, holding people accountable,” Speier told CNN.

“I think this lawsuit is ill-conceived,” Speier said. “And I’m not very supportive of it.”

The Democratic Party filed a lawsuit Friday inManhattan that alleges President Donald Trump’s campaign worked with the Russians and WikiLeaks, a website that released thousands of hacked emails from people close to Clinton.

The suit was filed against Trump’s campaign, Russia and WikiLeaks over allegations that they conspired to influence the 2016 election. The lawsuit claims all three parties played a role in hacking DNC computers.

When asked if she thought the lawsuit was a “big mistake,” Speier replied, “Whether it is a mistake or not, we’ll soon find out.”

According to The Washington Post, DNC Chairman Tom Perez claimed, “During the 2016 presidential campaign, Russia launched an all-out assault on our democracy, and it found a willing and active partner in Donald Trump’s campaign.”

Perez explained that “constituted an act of unprecedented treachery: the campaign of a nominee for president of the United States in league with a hostile foreign power to bolster its own chance to win the presidency.”

According to the Post, foreign countries are immune to most lawsuits filed in the U.S.
